American Idol - New Changes - And What I Think of Them!

Ohhhhhhhhh Snap!!! It's that time of year again when my favorite shows start to air!! American Idol starts tonight at 7:00 p.m. My friends and I have always made it a tradition to get together every Tuesday and Wednesday for the next several weeks to enjoy the coming weeks of mayhem! AI gives us hours of entertainment, while giving all 3 of us an excuse to get together despite our heavy workloads at work and school. So, the 3 of us will be throwing a HUGE party tonight for American Idol. If you'd like to increase our numbers to 4 or 5, to make it even more insane, please, feel free to let me know! The more the merrier!

So, I'm especially excited about this season because there are some major changes happening that I have to say, I am very excited about. Some of them are as follows:

Definite Changes

The Details

Fewer Trainwrecks

In an effort to bring some more "credibility" to the show, fewer freaks (Mary Roach), delusional dorks (Michael Sandecki), and hot messes (William Hung) will be featured during the auditions.

MY VERDICT: Hallelujah! I have to admit, the occasional mess, freak, slut, or douche is pretty funny; however, I find that I enjoy the GOOD singers much more than I enjoy the crappy ones. Though the crappy ones can give us something to laugh about, the GOOD ones help us to look forward to seeing more from that person!! I myself am ALL for this, even though many are not.

Character Development:

With Hollywood Week finally becoming Hollywood Weeks, we'll actually get to know the contestants and their stories, unlike in years past when the Top 12 could easily consist of strangers.

MY VERDICT: It's ABOUT TIME! I think in years past, many contestants have been overlooked, and overshadowed by the contestants that recieved more screen time. This will add an element of fairness to all the contestants, plus, it will help us to choose more carefully when you have more people to compare to. I love it!

WILD-CARD ROUND

For the first time since the show's second season, the judges will select the final three contestants that will comprise the Top 12.

MY VERDICT: Debatable. I've seen America make some BIG mistakes, but I have also seen the judges make some interesting choices as well. This could end up being VERY good or VERY bad in the end. But, I think this might help weed out all those retarded contestants who have no business being there. *Cough* Sanjaya *Cough*

TOP 24

With the semi-final round being comprised of 36 contestants -- as opposed to the usual 24 -- and with the judges determining the wild-cards, the makeup of the Top 12 won't necessarily be split evenly among males and females.

MY VERDICT: Finally! If more women (for example) deserve to make the finals, let them in! I think everyone is tired of the 6/6 split. The best singers should be in the finals. Not cute talentless hunks (Ace Young), not grandma-selected safe bets (Kevin Covais), and definitely not Sanjaya.

New Judge

The new kid on the block is songwriter-producer Kara DioGuardi, the mastermind behind Xtina's "Ain't No Other Man," Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl," and Pink's latest hit, "Sober." Will she rely on her professional experience like Randy? Will she battle with Simon? Will she ultimately replace Paula? (All parties deny this rumor). Will she tell it like it is and risk hurting the contestants' feelings?

MY VERDICT: Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! The only thing that could make me happier, is if they would just accept the fact that Paula is a drug addict, crazy person, and then get rid of her, preferably by execution. Alright so it's a little harsh, I know, but, c'mon, you know I'm telling the truth!

Shorter Results Show

Wednesday night's results show will be pared down from one hour to 30 minutes.

MY VERDICT: I think this is actually a fantastic Idea! Results shows were always kind of a pain in the butt. You just wanna know who the H377 got kicked off, but they show a frame of Ryan Seacrest saying, "Hello, welcome to American Idol! We have a good show for you today, but before we show you anything, lets take a 15 minute commercial break!" Thank Goodness for DVR!!! But still, it will be nice to just have them cut right to the chase.
